I know there are some great package tours about, it's just that in our experience these are rare. Your experience in Ha Long Bay sounds brilliant, but my experience of a package tour in Vietnam wasn't so good. I appreciate that sometimes joining a tour is the only option (EG you can't trek the Inca Trail independently) and some tours can be amazing. However, in my experience this is the exception. My advice would be to assess each option on its merits, don't always go for a tour and don't always rule them out. Have a great time in Vietnam/Cambodia!

Yep, I'd agree to the avoidance of tourist packages but they're popular for a reason...convenience and ease. People like my mum and dad are happy with a package tour and that's great. We prefer doing it our own way but having said that we went to Vietnam a few years ago and stayed in a couple of different hotels, all self organised. But decided to get a tour to Ha Long Bay, purely for ease as we didn't have much time there. We had a great tour guide from a mid range tour company and a huge, new, old-looking boat to ourselves for 3 days. It was great, instead of spending time with other westerners we were having dinner with the crew and learning how to captain the boat. Wouldn't think that happens often but do what suits your situation don't just rule things out because it's cool to go your own way.

P.s. Thanks for the border tip in VN/Cam, we're off there again this year!
